Supportive Congregate Housing: In 2002 WSFSSH staff and focus groups of residents met to construct our vision of the “ideal” adult residential care community. The result of this brainstorming was a concept paper that included all of the positive qualities of the current adult home structure and added a sense of greater dignity and freedom for our residents. This concept paper was carried to funders, including bankers and state agencies like the then-Division of Housing Community Renewal, as well as to the Governor’s Task Force on Adult Home Reform and advocacy agencies throughout the state.
A site was identified in the Bronx in 2005, and construction began in March, 2009. Capital funding came from the City of New York as well as a federal low-income housing tax credit allocation. We were fortunate in developing the Claremont to have the endorsement of the Claremont Home Owners’ Association as well as the unanimous approval of Community Board 4 and the City and State elected officials.
The Claremont has two components.There are 24 units of family housing with its own entrance, which opened December, 2010, addressing a need for affordable family housing that was identified by the neighborhood. The second component is 90 units of supportive congregate housing. The first residents moved into the congregate side of the building on April 12, 2011.
Supportive Congregate Housing at the Claremont is dedicated serving 90 persons of low-income who are 50 and older, many of whom have been homeless. The services include 24 hour staffing,, case management services, on-site laundry, assistance with activities of daily living, and medication supervision. There is an active daily recreation program. All the residents at the Claremont have their own individual private room, with modified kitchenette and private bath. A voluntary meal program, five days a week takes place in a congregate dining room and residents are encouraged to take part in activities in the greater community.
